  • Newly-elected councilors demand riot police end PolyU siege
    Date:2019-11-26

Dozens of pro-democracy district councillors-elect gathered in Centenary Garden in the afternoon, demanding the authorities order police to end their siege of Polytechnic University.

Michael Mo, who won a seat in Tuen Mun, said tens of thousands of people had asked the councillors to go to PolyU to tell police to move out officers surrounding the campus so "our brothers and sisters can leave peacefully.''

Paul Zimmerman, who was re-elected in Pokfulam, called on the government to "save our children" and find a way out of the turmoil.

Sai Kung district councillor Gary Fan said the police would allow five of them to go inside the university, where an unknown number of people are still holed up. Hundreds have already been arrested on suspicion of rioting since the siege began there on November 17.

Fan said others among them would instead head to Government House to press the administration on their demand for an end to the siege.

Police had cordoned off part of the area in anticipation of the councillors' rally, although the atmosphere remained peaceful.

Some of those present started marching through Tsim Sha Tsui, followed by members of the media, but their path was soon blocked by riot police officers.
